Two out of three times I bought Durian recently, was a miss. The first time, was packaged durian at Tin Hau’s fruit stand. It was completely overripe, bordering rotten. Toss. The next time I bought a whole durian, it was wonderful (see photo from an earlier post).

Today, I bought packaged durian again, and it was not ripe at all. Very disappointing. I nearly tossed it out, when I found an article about cooking unripe tofu. So I gave it a shot.

I sauteed durian in coconut milk and olive oil, with some spices including fresh jalapeno. The result, is something that tastes like buttery potatoes or pumpkin with a hint of sweet Durian. Not bad at all. At least I know that unripe Durian can be saved.

a lady from a local plant shop dropped off some organic soil at my place yesterday…and to my excitement, walked around my rooftop garden with Ooohs and Ahhs and gave me some gardening tips (mostly body language as she speaks Chinese). One of the tips was that the flowery part of the basil hold seeds. She showed me how to collect them…and now I have over 50 seeds from two branches of basil for re-planting. Nature’s gift.

While there are over 150 varieties of mangos in the world, in the US you can find about one or two varieties of mangos at a supermarket. In the last couple of weeks, I came across two mango varieties I’ve never never seen, in Hong Kong. The green mango and Thai Mango pictured below. The green mango is sweet & sour and has a perfumy taste that’s not comparable to anything else. The Thai mango is incredibly sweet and perfumey as well. I brought a bunch of thai mangos to a BBQ party and it was a huge hit.

and a few days later, these mangos were consumed..and these are their seeds. Can you tell which one is which?
